Of course, your dogs can mate naturally and at their own discretion, but as a dog breeder, manipulation of the process may be necessary. Breeders all over the world want to increase the rate of conception, achieve maximum litter size and produce quality puppies without compromising the health of the bitch.

Unavailability of stud dogs nearby may make natural mating inaccessible and semen may have to be imported. The semen may be imported from another part of the state or country, even from abroad. Stud service has no boundary to any breeder that has a breeding plan. Your choice of studs should be influenced by their usefulness to your breeding, irrespective of the distance. Many a time, a bitch may not be receptive to a male despite ovulating. The bitch may reject the stud you choose and be receptive to the one you are not favoured.In this case, artificial mating is necessary. Each breeder, whether stud or bitch owner, should be versed in artificial insemination procedures. This is because as a stud owner who wants to be shipping semen out to bitch owners, you must know the procedure to collect, store and transport semen among others, to ensure the semen get to the end user at optimum condition. Do you want dead semen to be delivered to your clients? As a bitch owner, you have to know how to thaw semen, check at least the mobility of the sperms before insemination, and how to inseminate. Although veterinary hospitals can handle this for you. You do not want to inseminate with already dead semen.

The stud owner will need to test the stud for infections and perform semen analysis to ensure it meets the acceptable standard. Then the semen can be extracted from the stud after a clean bill of health is issued.

Diluent will be added to the semen to prolong the fertilizing ability of the semen. If the semen is going to get to destination within 3 days or more, as long as the cup can still maintain a constant temperature required to keep semen stored , an express vacuum cup can be used.

The special flask will be padded with ice pack after preparation and place in an insulated box, and then placed in a sealed carton for the journey ahead. The semen is called Chilled Semen. Likewise, a freshly extracted semen is called Fresh Semen and should be used immediately,chilled or frozen in order not to loose its potency.
