Dog is the man’s best friend unarguably, but engaging in some activities with them can pose risks to human beings. Having an abnormal contact with dogs and other animals can lead to serious health hazard. Certain activities with your dog does not show how close you should be to your dog. Rather, it may cause the breach of public health.
Sometimes ago, I visited a village where dogs were allowed to wipe clean the anuses of children by licking them after defecation. They even allowed them to leak wounds on human, claiming that dog saliva has healing properties. These are age long practices that pose no danger to human health in their opinion. That is misconstrued in my opinion. Perhaps, the kids developed antibodies to fight off any danger or some sickness that came up were not related to those exposures by the villagers. They could blame other causes like lack of potable water in the community.
Furthermore, we are watching videos whereby dogs lick human faces and they do mouth to mouth kissing. Is that not barbaric? Does this show how close should you be to your dog? Our personal hygiene cannot be overemphasized. Even humans will be irritated to kiss many human beings. Are you comfortable kissing a stink mouth? People love to show affection to their pets, and kissing is the option they choose to show this love and affection to them. We should acknowledge that there are some potential dangers associated with this action.

Pet owners should know that the mouth of a dog can house bacteria ,viruses, germs an microorganisms which can be transmitted to human via their saliva. Some of these infections are salmonella, campylobacter, E. coli infections,rabies, Lyme disease, and leptospirosis. Zoonotic disease can cause serious sickness that can lead to death. Human can contract gum diseases from dog which can lead to loss of teeth in human.
Furthermore, many have endoparasite and ectoparasite that can cause illness in human. Ticks,fleas and mites can caused sickness in human or allergic reactions; they can be presented in dog’s mouth. When an infected tick bites human, it causes fever that can be confused with malaria if proper test is not carried out in the laboratory to ascertain the ailment. If a wrong sickness is diagnosed and being treated, the end may be disastrous.
In addition, your dog may injure you with nails and teeth in the process of kissing you. Kissing a dog can also be a reinforcement for bad behaviours in dogs. Some of the undesirable behaviours include, but not limited to the following jumping and nibbling on you. These are behavioural issues in dogs that should not be reinforced. Behavioural issues are not good for pet owners and pets.
In conclusion, not all dogs are unhealthy and can transmit diseases to us. Someone many not even cause injury to us mistakenly or under circumstances they considered as threat, but we should take precaution. All dogs should be socialize and sensitized to any activities we want to engage them in. We should ensure that they are healthy and free from parasites.I have my personal hygiene protocol anytime I am in contact with dogs and I will never kiss or allow any dog to kiss me. I am a crazy dog lover, but I ensure that I wash my hands 100 times if I have contact with my dogs 100 times. Let me ask you, how close should you be to your dog?
